In 2005, entrepreneur and art collector Jürgen A. Messmer was founding the messmer foundation in memory of his late daughter Petra. The charitable foundation is the sponsor of kunsthalle messmer which opened in 2009 in the historic complex of the former brewery Riegeler. Riegel is a municipality closed to the region of Kaiserstuhl, located 20 minutes north of Freiburg. Up to three large-scale exhibitions are presented annually. Among the most recent popular successes the museum presented exhibtions of Andy Warhol, Victor Vasarely, Salvador Dali and Marc Chagall. In addition to such solo exhibitions, large-scale group exhibitions are shown regulary on certain issues like water or kinetic art. To promote art, the messmer foundation regulary contributes the International André-Evard-Art-Award for concrete and constructive art, which is aimed to contemporary artists and which gets presentation every second or third year  in a large group show.

messmer foundation, which emerged from the Petra and Jürgen A. Messmer Stiftung founded on 28.12.2005,  is an independent foundation under civil law. Its purpose is to promote art and culture. The messmer foundation permits that the art collection continuously built up by Jürgen Messmer during the last 30 years can be shown to the public for longt term. The foundation is independent and pursuits exclusively and directly charitable purposes.
