Foundation and Museum
In 2005, the entrepreneur and art collector Jürgen A. Messmer initiated the messmer foundation in memory of his deceased daughter Petra Kerstin. The non-profit foundation runs the art museum kunsthalle messmer, which was opened in the historic buildings of the former Riegel brewery in 2009. Riegel is a municipality beautifully situated at the foot of a dormant vulcano, Kaiserstuhl, along the Großherzog Leopold Channel, only 20 minutes north of Freiburg. Every year up to three high-quality temporary exhibitions are presented to the public. Past exhibitions covering Marc Chagall, le Corbusier, Victor Vasarley and Salvador Dalí were great successes with the public. Next to these solo exhibitions, there are large-scale group exhibitions, which in the past were concerned with water or kinetics. The International André Evard Art Award, regularly announced and awarded by the messmer foundation, was established in order to promote contemporary concrete and constructive artists.
The messmer foundation, which emerged from the Petra and Jürgen A. Messmer Stiftung founded on 28th December 2005, is an independent foundation under civil law. Its purpose is to promote art and culture. The foundation operates without public funds and exclusively pursues charitable purposes.
